The first stars were out when Goose dismounted and made his way to the cabin that had been Kingston Henry’s. He had left his horse distant enough so that the animal wouldn’t encourage a nicker from an unseen horse in the log barn. If the cabin was deserted—and it seemed to be—it followed that the barn would be empty as well. The cabin’s several windows were shuttered. He avoided the steps, approaching the door from one end of the shallow front porch. Standing to one side of the door, Goose kicked it open. The cabin yielded nothing. Goose returned to his horse, continuing downriver.
